A brave man from Carlisle is set to cycle over 1,000 miles in just nine days to raise money for research and awareness in Blood Cancer.
On July 4, Craig Sowerby will embark on an incredible journey, cycling from John O'Groats to Land's End, covering approximately 1,000 miles over nine days.
The iconic long-distance cycle ride spans the length of mainland UK from the gorgeous beaches of Cornwall to the stunning countryside of northern Scotland.
The route, which totals 1189 miles or 1913 kilometres, will see Craig follow greenways, cycle paths and country roads, and runs on the National Cycle Network for over three-quarters of its length.
Craig's mission is to raise money for research and awareness in blood cancer, particularly supporting the MPN Voice charity, which helps individuals living with cancer and funds research to find a cure.
MPN Voice also provide clear and accurate information and emotional support to everyone who has been diagnosed with a myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) and their families/friends.
In August 2023, Craig was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer called Polycythaemia Vera (PV). The first thing he said to his consultant was “how long do I have left?”
Despite the initial shock and fear, Craig's consultant assured him that with proper treatment, he could lead a normal life.
Craig has a JAK2 mutation, causing his body to overproduce red blood cells, which can lead to severe complications, such as a stroke or heart attack stemming from an initial blood clot, if left untreated. Thanks to the excellent care provided by his consultant and nurses at Reiver House Carlisle, Craig's treatment is working, and he's determined to make a difference.
On his JustGiving page, Craig said: "At present my treatment is working and my consultant and nurses at Reiver House Carlisle are taking great care of me and keeping me here for a bit longer. So with your kind donations we can raise money to help people living with cancer and research in finding a cure."
Craig has already raised over £5,000 of his £6,000 target on JustGiving. You can donate here.
