Bookwell Primary School recently held its annual Design and Technology Challenge Day, where children were given a unique design task linked to Egremont Castle.

This day of creativity and teamwork is held each year to remember Dick Winter, a handyman at Bookwell School who had a passion for design and technology.
The day brings together all classes, each with their own design brief, inspired by a visit to Egremont Castle.
Children in Year 6 were tasked with designing buggies that could accommodate a person with disabilities for a tour around the castle.
Year 2 students created badges for an upcoming Castle Festival, while the reception children designed their own castle structures in the outdoor play area.
Throughout the day, children collaborated, shared ideas and helped each other with their projects. Teachers were on hand to guide the children, but the focus was on the children’s creativity and problem-solving skills.
This year, the winning class was Year 2, recognised for their innovative badge designs. They were presented with the Dick Winter Memorial Trophy.
Mr Hardy, headteacher said, “It was lovely seeing the children create some amazing designs, and the fact we could use the castle as inspiration really added to such an exciting day.”
“It was a wonderful day,” said Mrs Robinson, design and technology lead.
“The children worked incredibly hard and showed great creativity. We are proud of all their achievements and look forward to next year’s challenge.”
The Design and Technology Challenge Day at Bookwell was a huge success, and allowed the school to honour the memory of Mr Winter.
