A golfer and his young son will complete 36 holes as part of a fundraiser for a cancer charity.

Simon Brown, 55, from Currock, is a keen amateur golfer, and may soon be overshadowed by son Eli, aged five, who will be completing the ‘Big Golf Race’ at Carlisle Golf Club this weekend, in aid of Prostate Cancer UK, a national charity.

The charity helps fundraisers set up for the Big Golf Race, and said fundraisers for this event raise on average £600 each.

Mr Brown’s Just Giving page has raised £365 of a £250 target at the time of reporting.

Young Eli Brown has been golfing from as soon as he could swing a club – age three.

“I’ve got millions of kids and they all play golf.

“Eli came along unexpectedly a few years ago, and I started dragging him along with me golfing.

“He’s been playing at Penrith since he was three,” he said, adding that he has since entered various competitions.

He could be a professional soon, as many of golf’s finest players start training properly at early ages.

He gets trains by a professional player in Penrith regularly, and his father documents his journey on the YouTube channel 'Eli Brown... future golfer!!'.

"Any time from age three onwards is a good time to start.

“He's played a lot of rounds at Carlisle, Silltoh, Brampton, and he accompanies me whenever I play"

“We're going to walk the first18 and see how he gets on, and if he's okay we might walk the next 18 but if he's a bit knackered we’ll use the cart,” Mr Brown said.

He added that he had the idea to sign up for Prostate Cancer UK’s Big Golf Race after seeing an article of a mother cycling with her son, and thought it would be a rewarding opportunity.

They tee off on June 23, this weekend.
