A Carlisle school community came together to raise more than £1800 in memory of a much-loved member of staff.

Children at Pennine Way Primary School took on a fundraising challenge on Tuesday which saw them completing laps of the Harraby cycle track or school playground.

They were undertaking a charity walk in memory of Erica Bell who died suddenly earlier this year.

The mum of two, who worked in the school's kitchen, always served the pupils with a smile and with kindness, remembering their likes and dislikes.

Lindsay Burnett, Pennine Way headteacher, said they had been overwhelmed by the kind donations.

“It was wonderful to see the school community come together in memory of Erica.

"The children showed perseverance and determination to walk or run the distance, with some children managing 7km.”

Pupils from the nursery through to year six completed their walk dressed in colourful clothes, in tribute to Erica's bright personality.

Older children completed five laps of the cycle track which was equal to approximately one kilometre per lap whilst younger children aimed for three laps.

Some students chose to run the distance and others added extra laps.

Nursery and reception children walked two or three laps of the school playground.

Mrs Burnett described Erica as "a supportive colleague with a brilliant sense of humour which we miss immensely.

"The school community wanted to remember Erica with a sponsored walk as she is thought of daily with fond memories.”

Kirsty Turner, who worked with Erica in the kitchen, recalled what an incredibly special person Erica was.

“Erica had a massive heart and was always willing to help. She will be a huge miss at Pennine Way Primary School.

"Erica touched many hearts over the years and was one in a million. There will never be another one like our Erica.”

As well as raising money for North Cumbria Cancer Care, a charity chosen by Erica's family as it was close to her heart, the school will also plant a cherry blossom tree as a lasting legacy.
