A CARLISLE man has been put on the Sex Offender Register after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman.

Damien Smith, 34, of Shadygrove Road, Raffles, committed the offence in Carlisle on June 15 last year. He pleaded guilty to sexually touching the victim without her consent.

He entered his guilty plea when he appeared during a brief hearing at the city’s Rickergate court.

District Judge John Temperley imposed a one-year community order. The sentence includes a non-residential drug rehabilitation with Recovery Steps in Carlisle.

Smith must also take part in up to 20 days of activity as directed by the Probation Service and complete 100 hours of unpaid work in the community.

The defendant was told he must pay £200 compensation to the victim. Smith must be on the Sex Offender for five years. The sentence took account of the defendant's guilty plea, said the District Judge.
