Wigton was awash with the sound of music and merriment on Saturday as the town celebrated its annual carnival.

Floats and bands from across Cumbria travelled through the town as Wigton celebrated the 25th anniversary of the carnival which the mayor described as ‘the best yet’.

“What a brilliant day in Wigton,” said Sandra.

“The 2024 carnival was the best yet. Well done to everybody who took part.

“I am so proud of Wigton and that showed on the smile I had on my face all the way round. 

“It is my absolute honour to be Wigton mayor this year.  Well done everybody for a fantastic day.”

Sandra comments were echoed by former Wigton mayor, Christopher Scott.

“It was a reminder of the importance of community and the power of coming together to enjoy and appreciate the simple pleasures of life.”

One of the floats at the carnival One of the floats at the carnival (Image: Trevor Grahamslaw) The carnival is now a firm fixture in the town’s calendar having been relaunched in 1999. It now attracts hundreds of people into the town and bands from across Cumbria and further field.

The costume parade and the bands left Howrigg Bank at 1pm and finished at Barton Laws at around 2.45pm.

The event was also attended by local police who praised the ‘great turnout’ in Wigton.

A spokesperson for Carlisle Police said: “The Carlisle West rural officers enjoyed being in town for the Wigton Carnival yesterday.

“It was a great turn out - fantastic for the community to support the event in such numbers and the weather helped.

“Thank you to everyone who made themselves known and came over for a chat.”
