Last week, students from a Carlisle school took part in a tradition stretching back to the early 1970s.

Year 10 students at Morton Academy walked the 50 miles around Talkin Tarn in just 24 hours, marking the 48th year that the school has now completed the challenge.

Walkers were supported by staff members, families and friends along the designated trail, and completed the marathon effort on Friday June 21.

Richard McGuire, Principal at Morton Academy, said: "We are so proud of all our Year 10 students taking part in Friday’s walk which marks the 48th year students at the school have participated in this challenge.

"Each year, the walk is a fantastic opportunity for our young people to tackle something new, push their boundaries and work together to complete what is an admirable feat of both physical and mental strength. I hope this is a day they will look back on with real fondness and pride."

Speaking during the walk, Joseph Cairns, a Year 10 student at the academy, said:

"It was an excellent day and there was a great feeling of camaraderie between us all. I was a bit nervous before starting the challenge but it was absolutely worth it when I crossed that finish line!"

Jack Reay, another Year 10 student at the academy, added:

"I was really excited to be taking part in Friday’s walk and following in the footsteps of nearly 50 years of Morton students. I am so proud of reaching that 50-mile mark!”
