Iconic locomotive travels down Cumbrian coast in 'luxury' tour

The Midland Pullman embarked on a special tour on Saturday, June 22 that took guests on a circular route from Wales to Carlisle.

Eagle eyed photographer, Phil Waldron, managed to capture the locomotive as it travelled past Whitehaven.

Billed as an ‘experience’, the tour boasted ‘elegantly refurbished carriages’, a ‘welcoming and professional’ team, as well as stunning views and onboard dining provided by an executive chef.

It last made the journey in 1966 when the line became electric, and trains became much faster.

The Midland Pullman has been running luxury train journeys around the UK for many years.

Cumbria is a popular destination for luxury train journeys and a number have passed through the county already this summer.

Close up shot of the locomotive in its blue livery (Image: Phil Waldron) Pulled by the iconic Tangmere locomotive, the Northern Belle arrived at Carlisle Railway Station earlier this month after travelling through Oxenholme Lake District and Penrith North Lakes' stations on the iconic Settle-Carlisle line.

The 34067 Tangmere was built in 1947 by the southern region and is recognised as a 4-6-2 Battle of Britain Class Pacific.

The A4 Sir Nigel Gresley made a rare journey in April from Bury to Carlisle before it went along the Tyne valley railway, through Brampton and along to Newcastle.

Keen train spotters were out in force trying to catch a glimpse of the iconic locomotive passing through the county.

The engine, in its blue livery, was built in Doncaster in 1937 and is named after the locomotive designer of the same name, who designed many of the steam locomotives of that era, including the Flying Scotsman.
