The former Conservative MP for Penrith and the Border has said he is unlikely to vote Tory in the general election.

Rory Stewart was the MP for Penrith and the Border for nine years before leaving parliament at the 2019 general election.

During his time in parliament, he was a cabinet minister and stood against Boris Johnson to be leader of the Conservative party.

He was ejected out of the parliamentary Conservative party for voting against a no deal Brexit.

In an interview with The Observer, Mr Stewart said he will ‘probably’ vote either for the Liberal Democrats or the Green Party.

“When I go into a voting lobby, I panic,” said Mr Stewart.

“I think the Conservative party should no longer be in government.

“I guess my hand will once again float over Labour but will probably come down on Lib Dems or the Greens.”

Since leaving office, Mr Stewart ran for mayor of London and now hosts a successful podcast with new Labour spin doctor, Alistair Campbell.
