Avanti West Coast have completed the refurbishment of their Pendolino trains.

The completion of a £117m refurbishment was announced following the last of the Pendolino trains entering service this week.

This marked the end of what is thought to be the UK's most significant fleet upgrade to date, with 574 carriages having been refurbished in just over two years, equating to a newly enhanced train every fortnight.

The final train, 390020, took its inaugural journey on Monday, June 24, working the 8.43am service from Liverpool Lime Street to London Euston.

Having served routes between major UK cities for nearly two decades, the upgrade returns the entire Pendolino fleet to a virtually new state.

Andy Mellors, managing director at Avanti West Coast, said: "The refurbished Pendolinos, together with our new Evero fleet, are a key part of our mission to transform rail travel for our customers on the west coast route."

Peter Broadley, Alstom's services managing director UK, said: "This milestone highlights the dedication and expertise of our team at Widnes.

"We are immensely proud to see the entire Alstom-built Pendolino fleet returning to service in peak condition."

Customers can anticipate a more enhanced travel experience, including 25,000 new standard class seats, an onboard shop, refurbished toilets, power points at every seat and new carpets.

One carriage on each of the 11-carriage Pendolinos has been converted from first class to standard class, providing over 2,000 extra standard class seats.

Malcolm Brown, CEO of Angel Trains, the project's financial backer, said: "This is exactly what the partnership between our businesses set out to achieve together."
