THE monthly Summer Traders Markets will return to Whitehaven this week.

The markets will take place on Thursday, June 27, in St Nicholas' Gardens.

A range of traders from across the county attend the markets selling an array of produce.

This month Grasmere Gingerbread will be in attendance who have proved popular in recent years.

Gerard Richardson who has helped to organise the events alongside Whitehaven Town Council said: "This week it's our second Traders Market of the summer, we do five through the year.

"If anyone wants to trade, they can contact either myself or the town council as we still have spaces available.

"I'd ask members of the public to please come along and support the markets, folk keep saying that there is nothing to shop for in Whitehaven. But we're giving people extra reasons to come into the town and see what it has to offer.

"We've got Grasmere Gingerbread and a great baker from Carlisle who sells out every time, so we've got some good stalls.

"It's well worthwhile popping down and while they're there they can have a look around and realise that there are some nice shops in the town as well.

"It isn't all doom and gloom in Whitehaven, we set these markets off six years ago to try to give people a reason to re-engage.

"We've got another Traders Market in four more weeks and on that one, we're going to have some more activities for youngsters, because that one is in July like the one, we'll be holding in August.

"After that, we've got a Flower and Vegetable Show in early September, this will be the second as last year's was a lovely event.

"We had home-baked produce and giant marrows, it was nice to do something like that in the town centre.

"Later in the year, we've got our annual Christmas Light Switch On which we're hoping will be bigger and better than ever.

"Then we've got the annual Christmas Markets on the first Friday of December which will be accompanied by the firework display."
