With the weather warming up and the sun shining, it’s the ideal time for a picnic.
There are so many places to choose from in Cumbria, so we’ve compiled a list of what we think are the top 10, in no particular order.
Tarn Hows
Tarn Hows, between Coniston and Hawkshead, offers some of the best lake views in the county, as well as the surrounding woodlands.
It offers the perfect environment to relax, get the sandwiches out, and then enjoy a gentle walk along the trails afterwards.
Buttermere
This serene mere is surrounded by fells, and it can feel at times dizzying but also tranquil among the depths.
One of the more peaceful areas in the county, it’s likely there will be space for you, friends, and family to enjoy time together.
Aira Force
One of the UK’s most beautiful waterfall areas, the site near Ullswater also has a picturesque woodland surrounding it.
This is perhaps the best spot for the Gram should you be so inclined for picnic selfies.
Fell Foot Park
At the southern tip of Windermere, Fell Foot Park has expansive grassland, lake views, and space for games.
Bear in mind that its situation near Windermere will make it a tourist hot spot too, as long as you don’t mind sharing the space!
Grizedale Forest
If you’re worried about sunburn you may prefer the natural shade of trees, and there’s not many better places for it than here.
Located between Windermere and Coniston Water, the forest also has walking and cycling trails, with sculptures scattered throughout.
Derwentwater
Near Keswick, Derwentwater has several picnic areas with breathtaking views of the water and surrounding mountain, particularly at Friar’s Crag.
Ennerdale Water
One of the Lake Districts most secluded waters, Ennerdale Water could be the best spot in England for a picnic.
Tranquil and unspoiled, the natural beauty of Ennerdale Water is a must-visit.
Talkin Tarn
Near Brampton, Talkin Tarn is a small tarn with a rowing club and boat hire on offer.
It’s not quite the blanket-on-the-ground rustic style picnic you may expect, but it’s very close to Carlisle and offers water views, trail walking, and seating without needing to go too far.
Muncaster Castle Gardens
The history of Muncaster Castle makes it a worthy visit in itself.
Perhaps after a walk around the grounds, a picnic is just what you need, and the grounds are ideal with a meadow and woodland area nearby.
Rydal Water
Near Grasmere, Rydal Water offers several picturesque picnic spots, particularly in the area near Rydal Caves and along the shore of the lake, and is a relatively easy but worthwhile walk away from Ambleside.
