Penrith railway station’s charity bookshelf has now raised an incredible £10,000 for the local mountain rescue team.

Located in the booking hall, the bookshelf was established in 2015 and offers rail customers looking for a read on their journey a selection of used books in exchange for a small donation.

On Facebook, Penrith MRT wrote: "We are very excited to announce that we have now raised over £10,000 from our book shop at Penrith train station!

"A huge thank you to everyone who who has helped us get to this figure and a massive shout out to the team at Penrith train station who store and restock the book shelves for us.

"But this isn't the end, we would love to continue the store so please, if you have any books that you no longer use/want, you can take them to the staff at the booking hall or just pop them on the desk and they'll pick them up and put them on the shelves. Adult paperback fiction seems to be the most popular sellers!"
