Whitehaven harbour is set to play a role in a national campaign next week.

The 'Go Blue for Meso' initiative is a campaign attempting to raise awareness about mesothelioma, a cancer caused by asbestos, and the other dangers that come as a result of the substance.

The Wave sculpture on Whitehaven harbour will be illuminated blue in support of the campaign.

Action Mesothelioma Day takes place every year on the first Friday in July to remember those who have succumbed to asbestos related diseases, in the hope that such demonstrations will eventually lower this number to zero.

The organisers are also asking people themselves to get involved by lighting up their homes in blue colours to go alongside the larger displays.
