TWO brothers who subjected a Carlisle man to a 'brutal attack' in the city have been sentenced to jailtime - after an appeal found their original suspended sentence was 'unduly lenient'.

Kenneth Brown, 27, and Shaun Brown, 25, have been jailed after a court of appeal judge ruled that the sentence they received in April this year was unduly lenient, after being referred by the Solicitor General to the Unduly Lenient Sentences scheme.

In October 2022, the brothers subjected a man to a brutal three minute attack on Lowther Street, kicking and stamping on his head over 10 times and leaving him with a broken nose, hand and significant cuts and bruises.

Both were identified as being involved in the incident following a CCTV appeal by police and arrested by officers in Merseyside.

In April this year they were given suspended sentences for the offence - with the judge saying that 'the prisons are full'.

But on Thursday, June 28, the duo, both of Winmoss Drive, Kirkby, Liverpool, were sentenced to three years, six months for attempting to cause grievous bodily harm.

Speaking on the appeal Detective Constable Nick Mandale said “We welcome the revised sentences.

“Kenneth and Shaun subjected the victim to a brutal attack and now will be reflecting on their actions in prison.

“Such an attack could have killed the victim but luckily, he did not sustain more serious life changing injuries.
