CUMBRIA Police are reinforcing their message of staying safe as the Euros progress.

England is now through to the quarterfinals of the Euros 2024 contest and emotions are running high.

Football fans across the county flock to pubs, bars, and clubs to catch all the sporting action.

But in all the excitement Cumbria Police are warning members of the public to stay safe and protected when venturing out to watch the football.

People are urged to take care with alcohol, ensuring that they do not consume too much. Law enforcement also warns people against engaging in illegal drug use. Both heavy drinking and illegal substance abuse could lead to a criminal conviction.

Ahead of England's game on Sunday, June 30, against Slovakia, Cumbria Police wrote the following message on social media: "Cumbria is a great place to go out at night and we hope everyone who is out tonight has a good night.

"Please look after yourself and your friends. Know your limits. Have a meeting place or plan to get home if separated and if you feel unsafe at any point speak to a member of staff at the venue or a police officer."

England came away with a 2-1 win in this game progressing them to the quarterfinals where they will play Switzerland on Saturday, July 6.

Cumbria Police have also been warning people in the county against driving the morning after a night of heavy drinking.

Whilst a person might not be fully under the influence of alcohol, they may still be likely to be over the limit if breathalysed the following day. People are urged to not take the risk and avoid driving.

Cumbria Police said: "Even if you've been to sleep after drinking, there could still be high levels of alcohol in your system, & this could be enough to put you well over the drink driving limit. Don’t take any risks. If you’re not sure, don’t drive."

A further call has been put out about domestic abuse which can increase during major football tournaments.

Victims are urged to report any crimes immediately to the police.
