A YOUNG Carlisle man must pay £600 to compensate the owners of a popular city centre pub after he punched and damaged a window while drunk.

Axel Read, 22, was told by a district judge he must take a look at his behaviour after adding another offence to a criminal record which began in 2022.

It was Saturday, May 25, when Read found himself in hot water again after an incident outside the Woodrow Wilson pub on Botchergate.

A manager had made a statement. “He said that a staff member called on the internal radio, saying they heard a bang and smash,” Scott Parker, prosecuting, told Carlisle Magistrates’ Court.

“He informed the manager that a window had been smashed. He came to the front of the pub and found his duty manager outside the front of the premises.“

A male was pointed out to door staff, said Mr Parker, who continued: “The CCTV was then checked and it captured the incident.

"He (the manager) came back to where the police were just arriving and pointed out the defendant (Read), who had walked past the window and punched it; causing it to crack, leaving a fist-sized mark on the window.”

That left the business with a total repair bill of £600 and Read, of Cant Crescent, admitted criminal damage.

“Sometimes it is what it is,” said defence solicitor Chris Toms, mitigating. “This gentleman has been honest enough to say to me today that he was drunk. He is not able to recall the incident.

"He is a pleasant young man to talk to and sorry about the situation.”

Read had two previous convictions for five offences following past motoring misdemeanours and an assault.

The district judge, John Temperley, noted it was Read’s third court appearance since April 2022, and wondered whether there were any issues he should be addressing.

“If that is the case,” he told the defendant, “you need to get them dealt with as quickly as possible.”

Read was given a 12-month conditional discharge. This means there will be no penalty for Read during the coming year provided he keeps himself out of trouble.

He must pay £600 compensation to the business.
