A COASTGUARD team in West Cumbria has conducted a training exercise this week. 

Whitehaven Coastguard took part in a rope rescue training session around the harbour. 

In a post on social media, Whitehaven Coastguard wrote: "It was dry, sunny, and humid for the rope rescue training drills last night.

"A good refresher and also learning for those with upcoming rope qualification assessments.

"The main emphasis for this week's session was on; Vertical Rescue, Immediate Rescue, Recovery Methods, Animal Rescue/Equipment Bag, and Casualty Rescue Sling.

"From Rope Rescue (cliff/structure/vessel access), water rescue, mud rescue, casualty evacuation, vessels in distress, lost and missing person searches, suspicious items (ordnance/pyrotechnics), royal fish (whales, sturgeons, porpoises, and dolphins), then we’ve got you covered should you need us."

HM Coastguard are responsible for the initiation and coordination of civil maritime search and rescue within the UK search and rescue region.

This includes the mobilisation, organisation, and tasking of adequate resources to respond to persons either in distress at sea, or to persons at risk of injury or death on the cliffs or shoreline of the UK as well as some inland waters (for Cumbria This includes Derwentwater, Ullswater, Coniston, and Windermere).
