A NUMBER of dogs have been ‘secured’ by Cumbria Police and a man has been arrested following an investigation at a caravan site south of Whitehaven.

An eye-witness claimed ‘at least 30 dogs’ were being kept in the caravan and an investigation has now been launched by the RSPCA.

A 51-year-old man was initially arrested on suspicion of two counts of using threatening behaviour to cause harassment, before being rearrested on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.

Cumbria Police were initially called on Wednesday, June 26 where the man was first arrested, before returning on June 27 where ‘a number of dogs’ were taken to kennels.

The RSPCA also came to the caravan site near Braystones on June 28 and ‘removed’ two dogs which are now being looked after at private kennels.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: “Police were called on June 26 at around 12.59pm to the report of a public order and concern for the welfare of animals in a caravan in the area of Braystones.

“A 51-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of two counts of using threatening behaviour to cause harassment.

“He was further arrested on June 27 for causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.

“A number of dogs were located at the property and secured by officers. A number of dogs were taken to kennels on June 27.

“Officers made contact with the RSPCA who attended the location on June 28 and seized two dogs. All of them are now being cared for at private kennels.”

An RSPCA spokesperson said: "Two dogs were removed from an address in Cumbria by RSPCA officers, and they are now being looked after at private kennels.

“Enquiries are ongoing, and we are unable to comment further at this time."
