A WOMAN assaulted a police officer by trapping his knee in the front door as he came to check on her wellbeing.

Bethany Fullerton, 29, told the officer she could ‘batter him’ when he arrived at her Workington home on June 12 after her grandmother had raised concerns for her welfare.

Outlining the case at Workington Magistrates’ Court, prosecutor Pamela Fee said an officer arrived and knocked on the door. It was opened and the officer could see Fullerton ‘slumped on the floor’. The door was then slammed shut.

The door then opened slightly and the officer opened the door further. He didn’t know if Fullerton had harmed herself.

Fullerton then punched the officer to the right side of his knee. He told her that he intended to come into the address. Fullerton told the officer he was ‘skinny’ and she ‘could batter him’.

She then attempted to shut the door again, trapping the officer’s knee between the door and the doorframe.

Additional officers arrived on the scene and Fullerton was placed into handcuffs and told she was being arrested for assaulting a police officer.

Fullerton lifted her hand up, as if she was about to hit the officer. She was then taken to the police vehicle.

John Cooper, defending, said: “She is a young lady with ADHD [attention deficit hyperactivity disorder] and borderline personality disorder.

“Her grandmother rang police. She had genuine concerns for her wellbeing.

“It’s pushing and shoving the door. She was slumped on the ground. No injury was caused.

“The officer has done her a favour by getting there and making sure she is ok.

“It’s a guilty plea at the earliest opportunity. She is getting help from other parties.”

Fullerton, of Everest Mount, Workington, pleaded guilty to assault by beating of an emergency worker.

She was fined £165 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £64 victim surcharge.
