PLANS for a new Greggs at the site of a former doctor's surgery in Carlisle could create 12 new jobs if approved by the council.

The site was formerly Eastern Way Surgery which closed in 2022 as South Carlisle Health Care amalgamated services from Brunswick House, Eastern Way and Arnside House.

In June, it was revealed the fast-food outlet lodged an application to repurpose the former Harraby surgery building on Eastern Way and London Road.

Of the proposed employees, two would be full-time positions with 10 part-time positions on offer.

Proposed changes to the site itself include two illuminated facia signs as well as a non-illuminated totem sign.

Further modifications include substituting an existing staff entrance door with a window, setting up new air conditioning condensers and extract grilles.

The application has currently received one objection.

Greggs won't be commenting on the proposal with it currently being a live application.

If approved, it will not be the only fast-food outlet to bring fresh job opportunities to Carlisle.

In June 2023, planners unanimously approved plans for a new Burger King with drive-through and customer car park on a 2,500 sq. ft. site at St Nicholas Gate Retail Park on London Road.

Upwards of 30 jobs, including five managerial roles, are expected to be created when the site eventually opens providing a welcome employment boost for the local community.
