MARKUS Campbell-Savours has been elected as the first ever MP for the new Penrith and Solway constituency.
The politician will be the first Labour MP to ever represent the town of Penrith, winning the election with 19,986 votes.
Conservative candidate and former Workington MP Mark Jenkinson followed with 14,792 votes whilst Reform UK candidate Matthew Moody got 7,624 votes.
The other candidates received votes as follows: Julia Aglionby, Liberal Democrat (4,742), Susan Denham-Smith (1,730); Chris Johnston, Independent (195); Shaun Long, Social Democratic Party (156); Roy Ivinson, Independent (119).
Speaking to the News and Star on how he felt following the count, Markus Campbell-Savours said: "Elated. I am feeling really good, I can be quite pessimistic about these things so I didn't count my chickens, it's a pleasant surprise to have done so well.
"But now the job starts of delivering for this new constituency.
"Our team has always been our strength, the number of Labour Party members who have contributed towards this has been immense, we have spoken to thousands of people on the doorstep and I don't believe I could have done it without that support."
Speaking emotionally following his son's win, former Workington MP and Labour member of the House of Lords Dale Campbell Savours said: "I am feeling very proud but I am also hugely impressed by all the support that he has got."
During his victory speech, he thanked the many election staff on the evening and throughout election day, as well as his family, volunteers and campaign staff .
He also thanked Mark Jenkinson and his staff for their service to the Workington constituency, saying: "It is nearly 50 years ago that my father lost the Workington by-election. My party and my family know the trauma of political loss so I understand the upset which inevitably falls upon the loser and their supporters, I wish you all well."
Following the count Mr Jenkinson spoke emotionally saying 'there has been no greater honour' than representing his fellow Cumbrians and constituents during his time in Westminster.
Speaking to the News and Star following the result, Mr Jenkinson said: "I mean I am gutted. To be sent to represent my peers in Parliament has been literally the greatest honour.
"It's has been an incredible four and a half years, left me with some memories that I will never forget, but that's politics it is a brutal game.
"We will take stock tomorrow and see what comes."
Turnout in the Penrith and Solway constituency election was 63.42% with a total of 49,429 votes cast.
