Discover the world of chess and learn the skills behind the brainteaser game at Hammond’s Pond in Carlisle next week.

Run by Cumberland Council and various partners, the event on July 11 will take place between 4.30pm and 6pm.

The council has installed outdoor chess tables at Hammond’s Pond and Bitts Park through government funding.

It features four-seater metal tables.

John Lydon, Cumbria junior chess organiser, will give a talk, and members of the Carlisle Chess Club will be on hand to give advice and tips on playing chess.

Lydon said: "Chess in a very inclusive game where male and female, young and old, disabled and able-bodied people can all play and compete on equal terms.

"The game has many benefits and teaches important skills such as planning, calculation spatial awareness, logical thinking and concentration amongst others.

"Whether you have played chess before or you are a complete beginner we welcome everyone to join us at Hammond’s Pond to find out more about this fascinating game."

Councillor Anne Quilter, executive member for Vibrant and Healthy Places at Cumberland Council, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to install outdoor chess tables within both Hammond’s Pond and Bitts Park.

“It further enhances our commitment to the health and wellbeing of our residents.

“The tables will provide an excellent opportunity for both the local community and visitors to connect with others who share a passion for the game, reducing social isolation and increasing social inclusion.

“The outdoor chess tables provide a free, easily accessible activity for all ages whilst also allowing people to connect with nature in our beautiful parks.”
