THE Wave on Whitehaven Harbour was lit up blue this week.

On Friday, July 5, the iconic structure was lit blue for the Go Blue for Meso campaign.

This was done to raise awareness of mesothelioma, a disease caused by exposure to asbestos.

In a post on social media, the Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners wrote: "We'll be supporting today's national Go Blue for Meso campaign by lighting The Wave blue later this evening.

"It's all about lighting landmarks and homes to put a spotlight on mesothelioma, a disease caused by exposure to asbestos that deserves more attention because asbestos hasn’t gone away.

"The act of lighting up your home or focal point in a village, town, or city is a way to raise awareness, to remember loved ones who have sadly died of mesothelioma, and to acknowledge those living with the disease."
