Whilst the lakes and fells that surround them are most definitely worth a visit, there are also some wonderful tourist attractions that you definitely won't want to miss. 

Whether you just happen to be visiting the area for a holiday or you're a local who has been born and bred here, these attractions are well worth a visit. 

You might even find yourself going back time and time again. 

Carlisle Castle

This historic structure has been a domineering sight over the city of Carlisle for nine centuries. 

It has operated as a working fortress until modern times, it has even withstood sieges and held a royal prisoner. 

Nowadays the public can explore the castle rooms that date back to the medieval era and enjoy a range of exhibitions. 

The Rum Story

This museum shows what life was like in Whitehaven back in the 18th century and explores the Jefferson family's business. 

Goods like rum, wine, and sugar were brought to Whitehaven from all across the world. 

The exhibitions are housed in the original warehouse which dates back to 1785. 

Visitors can also buy rum based on the original recipe and other local delicacies. 

The Lakes Distillery 

Based on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, this attraction allows the public to see inside a working distillery. 

The centre produces a range of spirits including whisky, gin, and vodka. 

The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway (The La'al Ratty)

This novelty railway line is one of the oldest and longest-serving of its kind. 

The 40-minute journey takes visitors through 7 miles of untouched Cumbrian countryside with views of ancient woodland and a coastal estuary. 

The journey was praised by British author Alfred Wainwright as one of his favourites.
