Work on a project to upgrade the cycling, walking and wheeling infrastructure in Whitehaven will begin today (July 8).

Cumberland Council secured financial support from the Government’s Active Travel Fund, facilitating work on Route 14 of the Whitehaven Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) via the South Whitehaven area.

Route 14, also part of the National Cycle Network, is inclusive of both on and off-road cycling areas linking Stanley View to Esk Avenue in Whitehaven.

Proposed advancements involve the widening of the shared use cycleway/footway and modification of traffic signs and road markings to promote Active Travel.

The council's specialist highways engineers will conduct the work in phases throughout the summer and autumn months.

For the first phase, work commences at Esk Avenue, where route users will be instructed to follow a diversion route.

Cumberland Council expresses gratitude to the community for their continued patience during this improvement period.
