Kendal Museum’s new Cry of the Curlew is now open to the public, offering a fascinating insight into one of the UK’s most enigmatic birds.

Until August 17, visitors can learn more about the birds via displays incorporating original artwork, photography, poetry, sculpture and conservation.
The exhibition is free to enter and there are additional opportunities to listen to talks or meet the artists involved on selected key dates.
In addition to the exhibition Kendal Museum houses a fascinating collection of antiques, curiosities and nature including fossils, plants, minerals and animals – the latter including a full-sized polar bear, which is the masterpiece in what is Europe’s largest taxidermy collection.
Having once been curated by legendary fell-walker and novelist Alfred Wainwright, Kendal Museum was founded in 1796 as a place to connect the community with local, national and international history, whether that be the natural world exhibits or prehistoric, Mesolithic and Neolithic artefacts and tools.
Today not only can visitors enjoy the exhibits but the museum has a regularly evolving teaching programme encouraging school visits and offering loan boxes as teaching aids, plus a research programme and a collection of 6,000 images through its digital photo library.

Nearby, Quaker Tapestry Museum is home to the Quaker Tapestry, a modern masterpiece created by some 4,000 craftspeople from around the world to tell the story of Quaker life, people and events through the centuries.
It comprises in total 77 panels, and the museum features around 40 of these on permanent display.
Alongside the tapestry are interactive displays, films and activities to partake in, while the venue itself also remains an active place of worship for Quakers.
Throughout the year visitors can enjoy a host of courses such as the paper weaving and collage workshop on August 17 and the family fun day on July 20.
The museum also has an onsite café specialising in plant-based food.
