Three students from Carlisle College have been selected by UAL Awarding Body to exhibit their films and artwork at Origins Creatives 2024 in London this month.
First year Derrie Hall and second year Jonny Trotter have been selected to exhibit their films at Origins Creatives, taking place at the Mall Galleries in July.
Art student Annie Mellor will also have a painting from her Foundation Final Major Project exhibited at the Mall Galleries from July 17 until July 20.
Derries submission, titled Apollo, explores a tale about a psychopathic artist that paints his victims. Former music student Jonny, wrote and recorded an album, and made a nostalgic, 1980’s style music video for the title track.
Both caught the attention of UAL Awarding Body’s curator, Charlie Levine, amongst over 500 submissions.
Even though the course is Level 3 in Creative Media Production and Technology, it is very much a filmmaking course. Students are taught how to use a camera, edit, light, record sound, but also composition, visual storytelling, and more.
Second year course leader Peadar Sweeney said: "We try to run the course like a production company. So, we set briefs as though a client requested it, and then the students try to fulfil that task. We encourage an environment of independent learning and problem solving."
Derrie said: "I thought my tutors were joking. I only started learning filmmaking in September and now I am in a competition in London! I am so excited! My mum has called the whole family. This is amazing."
Origins Creatives is a free exhibition that is organised by UAL Awarding Body. This event offers a unique opportunity for art enthusiasts, critics, and industry professionals in the creative sector to discover original talent and to celebrate the dedication and hard work of young creatives from across the UK and internationally.
Origins Creatives provides a platform for emerging talent to be seen and celebrated, connecting them with potential collaborators, industry leaders, and a wider audience.
Both Derrie's and Jonny's films can be seen below. TRIGGER WARNING (18+).
