A MAN became abusive and hindered police who were called to deal with an incident at a children’s party.

Police were alerted to the incident in Whitehaven on the afternoon of June 23 where males were said to be ‘intoxicated’, Workington Magistrates’ Court heard.

Pamela Fee, prosecuting, said police arrived on the scene but no one was forthcoming with information.

Stephen Weaver, 48, was there with his son, who ‘seemed to be the person offering for a fight’.  Stephen Weaver then got in the face of a police officer and was calling him a ‘pervert’.

He hindered police by blocking a passageway and thrust his backside into one of the officers. Incapacitant spray had to be used on the defendant.

Ms Fee said the incident had taken place in the middle of the afternoon in full view of members of the public, including children, who were upset by the defendant’s behaviour.

Weaver, who was not legally represented, had nothing to say about his behaviour. He pleaded guilty to using threatening, abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

The defendant, of Windsor Road, Workington, was fined £80 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
