Bus operator Stagecoach has issued an update on the situation regarding a disrupted service connecting Carlisle and parts of West Cumbria.

It comes as residents were left angered as bus services throughout the day are cancelled for three weeks during ongoing road resurfacing works.

It was previously reported that, as of July 8, the 400 service was terminating at Station Hill between 8am and 5pm during weekdays, disrupting the journeys of those who rely on the service between Abbeytown and Silloth.

The services from Carlisle at 8.40am, 10.40am, and 2.50pm will now be diverting via Newton Arlosh to Abbeytown, and then Silloth, with the reverse being the opposite, a Stagecoach spokesperson said today (July 11).

The 12.35pm service will still need to terminate at Station Hill and the first and last two 400 services can run as per the timetable, they added.

This closure is now due to finish on Friday, July 19.

In response to the frustration, the spokesperson said: “We were unable to find a suitable alternative route which the service could take safely during those times.

“When notified of the works we did request via Cumberland Council for buses to be allowed through, so that we could continue to serve the full route.

"They unfortunately declined our request.

A Cumberland Council spokesperson said in response: “Options were explored with Stagecoach, but due to the extent of the resurfacing works a solution could not be found.

“We apologise for the inconvenience this causes for transport users and thank them for their patience whilst these essential resurfacing works take place."
