AN inquest has been formally opened into the tragic death of a Carlisle mother in a Lake District road crash last month.

Motorcycle rider Kayleigh Hunter, aged 28, was involved in a one-vehicle collision which occurred on the A592 near Glenridding, Ullswater, on the evening of Monday,  June 24.

This morning (Thursday) an inquest was opened at Cockermouth Coroners’ Court.

Assistant coroner for Cumbria, Dr Nicholas Shaw, said the brief circumstances were that Kayleigh, of Raffles Avenue, Carlisle, had been riding her motorcycle from Pooley Bridge towards Glenridding, following her partner Callum Murdoch.

“Initial circumstances seem to be that she has misjudged a right hand bend over a crest, lost control and collided with a stone wall,” said Dr Shaw. “She was wearing full protective gear.”

CPR was commenced but sadly Kayleigh — a mother, daughter and granddaughter — was pronounced dead at the scene at 8.45pm.

Dr Shaw also told the hearing: “A post mortem examination has been arranged. We do not have the results of that yet. Evidence of identification has been given by Callum Murdoch, her partner.

“There is of course a police accident investigation ongoing as well so the inquest is adjourned until all the outcomes of these things are known.”

A provisional date for a full inquest hearing was identified as November 21, 2024.

Cumbria police had issued a public appeal after the crash, asking people with information to get in touch by calling 101; making an online report at cumbria.police.uk/report-it quoting incident number 267 of June 24; or phoning Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
