A CUMBRIAN peer has been appointed to government and hopes the new role will allow her to deliver reforms that 'deeply matter' to people in Cumbria.
Baroness Sue Hayman of Ullock, who previously served as MP for Workington, has been appointed as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on Tuesday, July 9.
Baroness Hayman previously served as Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs from February 2017 to 2019 when she was in the House of Commons.
The former Workington MP has said that it is an 'enormous privilege' to be appointed to her new role, and looks forward to getting to work on issues such as cleaning up rivers, protecting communities from flooding and supporting farmers.
Baroness Hayman said: “It is an enormous privilege to be in this role. The work of change from this new government has begun – kickstarting economic growth and putting the country back in the service of working people.
“I will be focused on delivering for the environment and helping drive forward the reforms we need to see. These include cleaning up our rivers, lakes and seas, supporting farmers and protecting communities from the dangers of flooding.
"I know from my conversations that these issues matter deeply people in Cumbria.
“Change will take time, but the work starts now. ”
