A MAJOR supermarket chain is one step closer to moving into a historic Carlisle building, after plans have been submitted for signage at the city centre store.

Plans have been submitted for the display of one fascia sign and one internally illuminated projecting sign at the former House of Fraser store on English Street in Carlisle, by major supermarket chain Tesco.

A document supporting the application said: "The proposals include changes to the primary elevation, which includes the shopfront and faces east over English Street, together with alterations to the side elevation.

"The works are focused on the northern part of the building, at the junction with St Cuthbert’s Lane."

In June, the retail chain confirmed it would open a store in the former House of Frazer unit, which had been operating in the city centre since 1906.

A opening date has yet to be announced for the new Tesco Express store but the area manager said that Tesco are ‘looking forward’ to announcing a date.

Dean Conway, area manager, said: “We’re really excited to be returning to Carlisle city centre.

"It’s taken a while to find the right site, but we look forward to letting the local community know once we have an opening date.

“As well as offering a wide range of great value products, we’ll also have our community programmes Stronger Starts and Community Food Connection helping to make a difference to the local community.”

The plans were submitted to Cumberland Council's planning department on July 9 and will now go through a consultation process.
