Annan Athletic's new boss Wullie Gibson tasted victory in his first competitive game in charge.

But there was defeat for Queen of the South as they began life under ex-Annan boss and Carlisle United legend Peter Murphy.

Both clubs were in action in their opening group games in the Premier Sports Cup.

Annan got the better of Scottish League One new boys Inverness Caley Thistle with a 1-0 win at Galabank.

Tommy Goss hit the only goal in the first half in front of a 427 crowd.

The big striker's 21st-minute goal was enough to ensure victory over Duncan Ferguson's visitors as Annan made a positive start in group D.

Former Carlisle and Queens midfielder Josh Todd played the full game on his competitive return to Annan, with ex-United man Josh Dixon also in the home line-up.

They next take on Bonnyrigg Rose on Tuesday. Player-boss Gibson, 39, who also started the game, told his club's media channels: "Overall I'm delighted.

"The target was three points and we managed to achieve that, and the clean sheet is a bonus," added Gibson, who earlier on Saturday brought in 18-year-old former Kilmarnock striker Aaron Quigg.

New signing Max Kilsby, meanwhile, was unable to play following the ex-Carlisle defender's move on Friday because international clearance was not received in time. Gibson said he hopes that will be resolved by Tuesday.

Murphy, meanwhile, had a tough start as Queens boss as the Doonhamers faced Premiership side Aberdeen in a televised contest.

The Dons struck three times in the first half in Dumfries and claimed a 3-0 win.

Ester Sokler scored either side of a Graham Shinnie goal in the game which was shown live on Premier Sports.

Former Carlisle man Brennan Dickenson made his competitive debut for Queens, who next face Dumbarton in their second group A game on Tuesday.
