England suffered Euro 2024 heartbreak with a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final in Berlin.
Gareth Southgate's side were denied the title by a late Mikel Oyarzabal goal.
The Three Lions had earlier fought back as substitute Cole Palmer's 73rd-minute goal cancelled out Nico Williams' Spain opener.
But Oyarzabal's close-range finish from Marc Cucurella's cross cost England's men the chance of a first major tournament victory since 1966.
And it saw Spain secure the European title for a record fourth time.
All the drama came in the second half in the Olympiastadion.
The dangerous Williams swept Spain ahead in the 47th minutes with a firm finish after being fed by Lamine Yamal on the counter-attack.
Southgate replaced Harry Kane with Ollie Watkins, and then sent on Palmer for Kobbie Mainoo as England sought a way back.
England keeper Jordan Pickford - the former Carlisle United loanee - kept them in it with some defiant saves.
And they then levelled with a superb first-time Palmer finish from outside the box to give England fans hope of a dramatic victory.
But they were crushed in the 86th minute when Oyarzabal's clinical close-range finish proved enough for Spain to secure the Henri Delaunay trophy.
England captain Kane admitted to the BBC that "losing in a final is as tough as it gets."
And Southgate said: "We've competed until the very end.
"We didn't keep possession of the ball quite well enough. They had more control of the game and that can wear you down a bit.
"I think [Spain] were the best team in the tournament and over the piece they deserved to win."
