Public behaviour in Cumbria during Sunday’s European Championship final has been praised by a senior police officer.

Across the whole of the county there were only two reported incidents connected to people watching the football.

According to Superintendent Sarah Jones from Cumbria Constabulary, the overall perspective across the county was ‘positive’.

“It’s not the result we all wanted, but we would like to thank the large majority of those out watching the Euro final did so in a sensible and respectful way,” said Sarah.

“We had robust plans in place, with extra officers to ensure that everyone watching the Euro final enjoyed their night.

“Across the whole of Cumbria last night, there were only two reported incidents that had connection to those watching the football.

“Whilst any crime is unacceptable, the overall perspective was positive.

“Those suspected of committing criminal offences were dealt with swiftly and accordingly by officers.

“The acts of a very few though, should absolutely not take away from the fact the majority of the public were fantastic and showed what true community spirit is.”

Before the Euros, Cumbria Police launched a new campaign to tackle domestic abuse in the county.

The campaign, which was launched on Wednesday, June 15, saw Cumbria Police take extra measures to tackle offenders and protect potential victims of domestic abuse ahead of, and during, this summer's UEFA Euro 2024 tournament.

As part of the new campaign, Cumbria Police implemented a number of extra measures to combat domestic abuse, including additional visible patrols in the main nightlife areas of the county.

In addition, the force deployed specialist officers who are trained to spot offenders who may be targeting people coming out of pubs and clubs, and they ensured that resources are available at peak times such as full-time when people will be exiting venues.
