With the summer holidays quickly approaching, an educational play expert has listed free activities in and around Cumbria for families.
Playdale Playgrounds has come up with 10 activities in the area.
First, families can visit Roman remains.
Visit the famous Hardknott Roman Fort, High Street Roman Road, Ambleside Roman Fort, Barnscar Romano-British Farmstead, Ravenglass Roman Bathhouse and Aughertree Fell Settlement, all of which are available 24 hours each day.
Another educational venue is the Dock Museum, reopening on July 24, which creatively blends history with fun through exhibitions on the first and second World Wars, Cumbria’s rich history in iron and steelworks, and an adventure playground.
Similarly, the Keswick Museum houses exhibitions for free learning about Lakes poets and local history.
There is also a special exhibition showing until March 2025 featuring the famed Robert Southey and a reimagining of Goldilocks.
For adventurous kids, Keswick Mouse Trail provides a map-based search.
Pick up a map from the Keswick Cheese Deli, or download one from the website.
Once a trail has been completed, participants will get their maps stamped to have a memento of their adventure.
Brockhole on Windermere offers free-to-enter outdoor attractions on the shores of Lake Windermere.
There are various activities to keep families entertained, although some of the experiences require paid tickets.
From the historical ruins of Kendal Castle to the stunning wildlife at Dubwath Silver Meadows, there's something for everyone.
Visit the family-friendly Fell Foot Park for duck feeding, picnics, and lakeside paddling.
Marvel at the breathtaking beauty of Aira Force, with its waterfall trail and rock and tree-climbing.
For creative kids, a visit to Thuline Studio in Windermere is sure to inspire with its gallery filled with famous cow paintings.
