A Carlisle man has been forced to postpone his scheduled scooter trip to Africa after his travel partner suffered a serious injury.

David Kershaw has completed several long-distance journeys on his trusty scooter Pepper to raise money for charities.

Earlier this year, he announced plans to ride 5000 miles in a three-week journey to north Africa, alongside close friend Peter Laidlaw, a director in the British Motorcycle Federation (BMF).

Sadly, Peter was hit by a car recently and the two have been forced to delay their trip until the director makes a full recovery.

David said: "We had a problem with getting a bike for Pete. It turned up several months later than we were expecting it, so I didn't have time to prep it for going to Africa. So we decided that, because we weren't ready for Africa, we would go to the highest point of the Alps, and go through around six countries on the way back.

"While I was at the World Superbikes in Misano, I got a text from Pete to say that he'd been hit by a car on his bike, and was airlifted to hospital, where he has undergone surgery. He's up and about, he's walking, but he's not put a helmet back on yet. We're a team, so we still want to do something this year, and maybe do Africa next year. People have very generously donated to GoFundMe, so we're looking to definitely do something in early October. We're not giving up."
