A north Cumbrian swimming pool has launched a campaign encouraging people to buy a tile in order to protect its future for generations to come.

Wigton Baths Trust has launched a new fundraising scheme to enable them to undertake essential works to make the building more energy efficient which will reduce running costs.

For just £5, people can buy a tile which will go towards a new pool cover, the erection of steel framework and insulation, tiling internally, and a new boiler.

Claire Shepherd, a trustee at the baths, said: "It will have a big impact because obviously the energy costs have gone sky high and it will have a big impact on the energy costs.

"But it will also future-proofing the pool."

The trust secured funding from the UK Government Swimming Pool Support Fund earlier this year to assist with energy efficiency improvement, but the funding doesn't cover the cost of the work.

As such, they are trying to raise £22,000 to undertake the work.

The names of everyone who donated to the fundraising campaign will be displayed on a board outside the reception once the project is completed.

Ms Shepherd added: "Without this work being done, the energy costs remain very high, which means that it makes running the pool a lot less cost efficient. By doing this, we're future-proofing the pool for generations to come."

The pool has a big impact in the community, with many organisations making use of it, which is why the trust is so keen to ensure it can continue to be used in the future.

"So many different people within the community use the pool. There's about ten different schools that use the pool for their swimming lessons.

"There's swimming clubs, there's swimming groups for people with disabilities, ladies' swimming, so many different things.

"And to be able to future-proof it for all of those people and their generations to come is imperative."

Businesses are also able to get involved in the fundraising efforts by sponsoring a board which will be displayed inside the pool area.

They're looking for 24 businesses to provide support.
