CUMBRIA Constabulary has been given permission to continue holding £4,500 of 'suspicious' cash which officers seized from a driver on the M6.

The money found in a white van by officers as the driver was travelling south near to Junction 41, Carlisle’s Rickergate court heard. A district judge gave police permission to continue holding the case for three months.

The driver, from Glasgow, was unable to give a credible explanation for why he had the case, the court was told. Officers will continue to investigate its origins.

The driver involved did not oppose the police application, made under Proceeds of Crime legislation and he did not come to court for the hearing.
