Cumberland Council has launched a three-year strategy to combat crime and antisocial behaviour.

The Cumberland Community Safety Partnership, including the council, fire and rescue service, police, NHS Integrated Care Board, and probation service, is spearheading the initiative.

Cllr Denise Rollo said: "Cumberland is one of the UK’s safest areas in terms of crime and disorder.

"However, we still all have a role to play in keeping it that way, and tackling issues when they arise."

The council aims to counter issues such as domestic abuse, violence against women and girls, as well as antisocial behaviour.

The initiative will focus on areas such as making public spaces safer for women and girls, reducing the number of repeat victims of antisocial behaviour and improving the response to incidents of 'high tension'.

Cllr Rollo said: "Community Safety Partnerships focus on prevention and early intervention.

"They bring together all the agencies who can influence the safety of our residents.

"Together, we can see all the sides of a community safety issue, and we can tackle it from several different angles.

"Acting in isolation can only get us so far - the partnership approach gives us a far wider understanding of what the issues are and how they might be solved."
