Whitehaven will host a free event this month to mark the RNLI's milestone 200th anniversary.

The celebration is organised by Workington RNLI and features a range of other emergency services on July 27 from 1pm to 4.30pm.

Highlights of the event include lifeboat displays, an exhibition of local lifeboat station history, and entertainment from sea shanty group Nobody's Friends.

Tours of Workington RNLI's all-weather lifeboat Dorothy May White, funded by the community, will be available.

Attendees will also have the chance to meet volunteer crew members and understand more about the charity's work.

Workington RNLI and St Bees RNL will be demonstrating their skills in a harbour display.

Workington RNLI's water safety officer will also provide information on staying safe around water this summer.

An exhibition curated by Bob McLaughlin, chairman of Workington RNLI, displaying memorabilia from the local RNLI history, will be held at the Beacon Portal.

Tim Chittenden, lifeboat operations manager at Workington RNLI, said: "We wanted to take this opportunity to mark the 200th anniversary of the RNLI and celebrate our colleagues who are part of other volunteer emergency services.

"We are looking forward to welcoming as many people as possible to our event, and showing the capabilities of what our volunteers and boats can do."
