WHITEHAVEN Coastguard took part in a rope rescue assessment.

The session took place around the harbourside area.

The training session was to assess the work of rope rescue technicians who are part of the coastguard team.

In a post on social media, Whitehaven Coastguard said: "The team turned out to support facilitating a number of Rope Rescue evolutions, enabling two more of the team to be assessed and successfully signed off as Rope Rescue Technicians. This was under the control of one of our Senior Coastal Operations Officers.

"Congratulations James and Jack for the work put in over the past 12 plus months towards achieving this, having first achieved Rope Rescue Operator status prior to this.

"Nationally, HM Coastguard Rope Rescue teams are trained to effect the initial phases of Rope Rescue (Locate, Access, Stabilise) with just two officers at technician level (where life is in immediate danger), but more officers are required in order to conduct recovery (Extricate, Transport).

"We deploy technical Rope Rescue for the safe recovery of stranded or injured casualties (human or domestic pets) on the cliffs or shoreline, as well as vertical / restricted access on vessels and coastal structures.

"Whilst the coastal environment is our primary area of operation (meeting our statutory obligations), as a Category 1 responder with legal obligations under the Civil Contingencies Act the various skillsets of HM Coastguard can also be called upon to assist partner emergency services inland."
