Carlisle's much-adored model railway line is set to reopen on the weekend of the Upperby Gala at Hammond's Pond.

The club, which was established in 1936, was 'very happy' to announce on social media that Carlisle Hammonds Pond Railway would be returning to the public on Sundays, following the event of Sunday, July 28.

"We will be having our grand re-opening of the railway on the same day as the re-arranged gala day at Hammonds Pond on Sunday, July 28," the club said.

"It would mean the world to us if you could all come down and show your support to the railway and the friends of Hammond's Pond.

"We have missed seeing all your smiling faces riding around our little railway in what is one of the last and in our opinion, the nicest Victorian parks in Cumbria."

To ensure safety, the week leading up to the grand reopening will be used for testing the train tracks, though no public rides will be given during this period.

Emphasising the importance of the railway to the park, a spokesperson from Friends of Hammond's Pond said: "We know how much hard work their volunteers have put in to get the lineup and running as it has done for many many years.

"It is such an integral part of our park and I know all visitors to the park will show them the support they so deserve."

The Upperby Gala, organised by Cumberland Council and supported by Friends of Hammond’s Pond Group, will provide various activities and performances from 1pm to 4pm.

Attendees will also enjoy entertainment from Tanzanian Acrobats, Northern Heights, Razzamataz, Express Dance Studios, Drum Nation, Char, and the Lazy River Jazz Band along with children's entertainers, a fun fair, an owl magic display, archery, face painters, and balloon modelling.

There will also be food stalls and the Hammond’s Pond Café available for attendees.

Entrance to the gala is free, with vehicular access and free parking from the park's Blackwell Road entrance.

Vehicular access and parking at the Buchanan Road entrance is restricted to those with permits or disabled access only.

Pedestrian access is from Blackwell Road, Buchanan Road, Henderson Road and Scalegate Road.

Anyone interested in the railway line should keep an eye on the Carlisle Hammonds Pond Railway Facebook page.
