A CARLISLE man was caught with two illegal drugs after he was seen acting “strangely and suspiciously” on a city street.

When he appeared in front of magistrates, 40-year-old Daniel Turnbull told how a decision to use cocaine and cannabis had gone “hand in hand” with his consumption of alcohol.

Turnbull appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court following an incident on June 2.

“At around 1-30am, police received a phone call from a resident at Oswald Street (off London Road),” said Peter Bardsley, prosecuting, as he outlined the facts.

“A man in dark clothing had been acting somewhat strangely and suspiciously in the street for about an hour.”

Police attended, found Turnbull and he was searched.

“He was asked whether he had anything on him,” said the prosecutor. “He said ‘cannabis and other stuff’. He produced a small amount of cannabis and a small amount of white powder, cocaine.

“Both are valued at under £10. He was interviewed on June 2 and confirmed that the items were his.”

Turnbull, of Shadygrove Road, Carlisle, pleaded guilty to the possession of both controlled drugs.

Magistrates heard he had last been in court during October, 2021, for drug-driving.

He was not represented by a solicitor and addressed magistrates from the dock to provide mitigation for his latest offending.

“It’s not something I enjoy doing,” said Turnbull of the cannabis and cocaine crimes. “As soon as I have a drink it goes hand in hand. I try to stop taking it. It’s just one of those things.”

Turnbull was fined £140 and ordered to pay prosecution costs and a mandatory surcharge, his total court bill being £281.

Magistrates also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the cocaine and cannabis seized from him.
