Workington station is in the running to be named ‘Small Station of the Year’ at the National Rail Awards.
The Cumbrian station has been shortlisted alongside others across the country, with judges considering it based on a range of criteria.
This includes accessibility, information provision, ticketing infrastructure, customer service and overall presentation.
Consideration was also given to the station’s links with its community.
Here, Workington has a strong case thanks to the ‘Rails Which Circled the World’ exhibition, which highlighted the railway’s historical importance to the town’s coal mines, ironworks, steelworks and docks.
Northern's regional director in the North West, Craig Harrop, said: “Workington is a lovely station with many historical features that have been respected and preserved.
“Our station manager Jane Murray and her team are a great asset to Northern and they go out of their way to help our customers get where they want to be - not just at this station but at others along the line as well.”
The National Rail Awards are known as the ‘Railway Oscars’.
The awards ceremony will take place in London on Thursday, September 12.
Northern is the second largest UK train operator, providing 2,500 daily services to more than 500 stations in the North of England.
