CUMBRIAN rugmakers are set to showcase their creation at the upcoming Cumberland Rag Rug Exhibition.

The exhibition, which will feature contemporary rugs that have been made in Cumbria and the North of England, will take between Saturday, September 7, and Sunday, September 15 at Lanercost's Dacre Hall.

The exhibitions also focuses on sustainability, with craft prioritising the usage of recycled materials.

Raf Appleby is one of the local rugmakers who has helped to organise the event and explained more about the art.

She said: "This is a local craft championed by Winifred Nicholson, who designed many rugs herself and worked hard to protect this wonderful way of ‘painting with fabric’.

"Those new to the craft as well as those who would like encouragement are very welcome. All materials needed will be provided and refreshments are available.

"If the demand is sufficient we will put on more workshops.

"This afternoon will - I hope - bring together those rug makers who often work at home in a solitary way so that a strong rug making community could evolve."
