MEMBERS of coastguard teams in West Cumbria were presented with The King's Coronation Medal.

Volunteers at Whitehaven and Maryport Coastguard stations were presented with the medals at a ceremony this week.

Those who have served in the Armed Forces and other emergency workers are often those who are given these awards, which is a tradition that dates back hundreds of years.

In a post on social media, Whitehaven Coastguard wrote: "This evening, eligible members of the team joined the Area Management Team and flank station colleagues from the Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team to be presented The King's Coronation Medal.

"The tradition of Coronation Medals dates to the reign of King James I when the first Medal was awarded in 1603.
