Cumbria’s trio of Northern League teams get their seasons under way this weekend.

There are away trips for Carlisle City and Kendal Town while Penrith kick things off at home.

City, under new manager Dan Kirkup, start their bid to build on last season’s eighth-placed finish with a trip to Tow Law Town, who finished 19th last term.

The Gillford Park club have strengthened their squad this summer with signings such as the young Carlisle United loan defender Josh O’Brien.

Former United youth forward Romeo Park is now on City’s books, along with ex-United and Workington Reds man Liam Lightfoot.

The game in the north east will be Kirkup’s first competitive game in charge, the ex-United defender having replaced Jim Nichols at the helm.

For Darren Edmondson’s Penrith, meanwhile, a home encounter with Birtley Town gets their 2024/25 season under way.

The Bonny Blues finished 15th last term with their visitors having ended fourth.

Edmondson’s additions this summer have included a return for forward Martyn Coleman, while veteran defender Kyle May is also back with the club.

Kendal, meanwhile, are starting life in Northern League Division One having been moved from the North West Counties League in the summer.

The south Cumbrians’ appeal against the decision was rejected, leaving them facing a season of markedly increased travelling commitments in a league dominated by north east clubs.

The first trip for Kendal comes on the opening day when Jimmy Marshall’s side go to Redcar Athletic, who finished 12th last season.

Former Carlisle City frontman Jordan Palmer is among the additions to the Mintcakes’ squad as they aim to make their mark on their new league.

All three games are on Saturday and kick off at 3pm.
