Mountain rescuers were called out to help a walker who had a suspected dislocated shoulder.
Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team (WMRT) said a call was received from Cumbria police about the incident at 3.50pm yesterday (July 24), and that it happened at Broad Crag Col.
Team members were deployed and a helicopter was requested due to the time it would take to reach the casualty on foot.
In the meantime, the casualty’s party was able to make their way to Lingmell Col.
A spokesperson from the team said: “Helimed 58 from Langwathby duly responded but was diverted to a higher priority tasking.
“Then Helimed 08 from Blackpool was tasked, but again was called away.
“Unfortunately the weather was deteriorating so the stretcher evacuation then became the only remaining option.”
They said numbers from the Wasdale team were too low for a long carry, so support was requested from Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team (DFMRT) which was quickly provided.
But when they arrived, the casualty’s condition had improved, and she ‘very stoically’ decided to continue the descent on foot.
“With support from team members this proved possible and a slow walk was completed to Brackenclose, where a handover to a land ambulance crew took place.
"The team returned to base to reset the vehicles for the next callout.
“Thanks to both Helimed crews and to Duddon and Furness MRT for their willingness to support once again.
“We wish the walker well and a quick recovery,” the WMRT spokesperson said.
The callout lasted six hours and 28 minutes and involved 16 WMRT members, the Great North Air Ambulance, Northwest Air Ambulance Charity, and DFMRT.
